Terms of Service
Terms of Service
Last updated: October 11, 2026
These terms apply to the Linux Migration Tool website and the Linux Migration Assistant desktop application (together, the "Service"). By using the Service, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, do not use it.
1. What the Service does
The Service provides Linux distribution information, local system diagnostics, compatibility estimates, application alternatives, and migration-planning guidance. Features and supported platforms may change as the project develops. Unless a feature is explicitly described as available, it should be treated as planned or experimental rather than promised functionality.
The desktop application currently performs hardware and application discovery locally. It can request targeted external evidence, such as hardware-database records, package availability, application listings, and the published recommendation catalog. It does not need to upload your complete diagnostic report to produce a recommendation.
2. Estimates, evidence, and limitations
Compatibility labels and distribution rankings are estimates based on available catalog data, detected local information, and external evidence. Catalog coverage may be incomplete, delayed, unavailable, or wrong. A package being present in a repository does not prove that a particular device works correctly, and a missing search result does not prove that a device is unsupported.
A distribution score is a decision aid, not a benchmark, warranty, guarantee, or substitute for checking the exact computer, applications, peripherals, games, anti-cheat systems, drivers, firmware, and workflow you depend on. Distribution releases and third-party support change over time.
3. Your responsibilities before migration
Before installing Linux, changing partitions, changing boot configuration, or transferring important files, you are responsible for:
- making a separate, readable backup of important data;
- creating and testing appropriate recovery media;
- verifying the downloaded installer and its source;
- testing the target distribution from a live USB where available;
- checking critical hardware and applications on the exact machine;
- reading each operation carefully and confirming the intended target disk and partitions.
Do not proceed if a backup cannot be restored, the installer cannot see a required drive, or a critical device does not work in the live environment. Keep the original operating system and recovery path until the new installation has been tested. The current diagnostic/planning flow does not itself authorize destructive disk operations.
4. Your control and permissions
You are responsible for decisions made using the Service and for actions taken on your computer. Do not use the Service to violate another person's rights, bypass access controls, interfere with systems, or submit information you are not authorized to share. You must have permission to scan any device or system you use it on.
5. Third-party services and links
The Service may retrieve information from third parties, including Linux hardware databases, Linux kernel/hardware documentation, distribution package repositories, Flathub, Linux distribution directories, GitHub release metadata, and distribution websites. Those providers operate independently, may change or remove information, and have their own terms, privacy practices, availability, and security controls. The Service does not control or guarantee their content.
6. Intellectual property and open-source components
The Service may include or link to open-source software, distribution packages, and third-party materials subject to their own licenses. Those licenses continue to apply to the relevant components. Product names and trademarks belong to their respective owners. Mentioning a distribution or application is not an endorsement by its publisher.
7. Availability, changes, and support
The Service is provided on an evolving basis. We may change, suspend, or discontinue a feature, catalog source, download, or part of the website. External sources and network connectivity can fail. The desktop application is designed to fall back to saved or bundled catalog data when supported, but a fallback may be less current.
No particular response time, support level, release schedule, or continued availability is promised unless separately agreed in writing.
8. Disclaimer and limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, the Service is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties that it will be accurate, uninterrupted, error-free, secure, fit for a particular purpose, or compatible with any specific hardware or software. Nothing in these terms excludes a right or liability that cannot lawfully be excluded.
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, the operator is not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive loss, or for loss of data, revenue, use, business, or system availability arising from use of or inability to use the Service. This does not limit liability where such a limitation is prohibited by law.
9. Privacy
Use of the Service is also governed by the Privacy Policy, which explains local scanning, limited external lookups, website operational data, and the status of any future optional telemetry.
10. Updates to these terms
These terms may be updated as the Service changes. The "Last updated" date identifies the current published version. Continued use after an update takes effect constitutes acceptance only to the extent permitted by applicable law. If you do not accept a material change, stop using the Service.
11. Contact and governing law
For questions about these terms, use the contact information published on the About page. Applicable law and venue are subject to the operator's published legal details and any mandatory protections that apply to you. Nothing in these terms limits non-waivable rights under applicable law.
